Directions to prepare 2 servings of hot chai:
- In a pot, bring 1 cup of water to a simmer. For an extra kick of flavor, consider grating 1-2 inches of fresh ginger into the water (optional).
- Once the water simmers, add 3 teaspoons of The Garam Chai Company chai mix and boil for 2 minutes.
- Pour in 1 cup of milk or a non-dairy alternative and continue boiling until the mixture begins to rise to the top of the pot. Immediately remove from heat.
- Sweeten your chai. Start with 1 teaspoon of sweetener per serving. Adjust as needed.
- Allow the chai to steep for 1-2 minutes.
- For a delightful froth and enhanced flavors, consider pouring the chai from one pot to another from approximately 12 inches height (optional).
- Strain the finished chai through a mesh strainer into two serving cups.
Remember, every Indian auntie has her unique chai recipe, so feel free to adjust according to your preferences. You can modify the water-to-milk ratios and the amount of chai mix used.
Additional Notes:
- Non-dairy alternatives may have their flavor affected by boiling, so they can be heated separately and then added to the boiled water/chai mix.
- Traditional sweeteners like jaggery or cane sugar add an authentic touch to chai, but granulated sugar, honey, or maple syrup can also be used.
Enjoy your delicious chai!
